Baton Rouge is the state capital of Louisiana and located along the Mississippi River. It is home to both Louisiana State University (LSU) and Southern University along with numerous businesses and industrial facilities.
In 1699 the French explorers called the area Red Stick or Istrouma, for poles erected by Indians with fish and bear heads attached in sacrifice.
Baton Rouge has flown under several flags: France, England, Spain, West Florida, Louisiana, Confederate States of America and the United States of America. It was incorporated in 1817, after Louisiana was admitted into the Union on April 8, 1812. Baton Rouge became the State Capital in 1849.
